A Glutton For Self-Punishment
Crap & tax is lost, BarryCare is on life-support, but the Energizer Bunny of Radicalism just keeps going and going and going....:
....and with the same....well, demogogic apolmb and divisive rhetoric that worked so darned well for him over the past couple of months. Thus has "Yes, we can!" become the "Kiss my ass!" that it always was and was always gonna be - which soft-headed fools like Peggy Noonan are only now realizing:
Looking back, a key domestic moment in this presidency occurred only eight days after his inauguration, when Mr. Obama won House passage of his stimulus bill. It was a bad bill—off point, porky and philosophically incoherent. He won 244-188, a rousing victory for a new president. But he won without a single Republican vote. That was the moment the new division took hold. The Democrats of the House pushed it through, and not one Republican, even those from swing districts, even those eager to work with the administration, could support it.
This, of course, was politics as usual. But in 2008 people voted against politics as usual.
It was a real lost opportunity. It marked the moment congressional Republicans felt free to be in full opposition. It gave congressional Democrats the impression that they were in full control, that no one could stop their train. And it was the moment the president, looking at the lay of the land, seemed to reveal he would not govern in a vaguely center-left way, as a unifying figure even if a beset one being beaten ’round the head by the left, but in a left way, without the modifying “center.” Or at least as one who happily cedes to the left in Congress each day.
Things got all too vividly divided. It was a harbinger of the health care debate.
Three points:
1) "People" should have learned by now that Democrats promising an end to "politics as usual" is the very epitome OF "politics as usual".
2) A "lost opportunity" for "unity" and "bipartisanship" in Ms. Noonan's noodleheaded mind, perhaps; it was an opportunity Red Barry and Crazy Nancy and Dirty Harry never desired or intended. Their "opportunity" was this two-year window to use their mega-majorities to slam, cram, and ram through every last plank of their neoMarxist agenda while the GOP was powerless to stop it. And on Hogzilla, they succeeded exactly as planned.
3) The reason it harbinged the health care debate is because Hogzilla as False Messiah sold it - i.e. an instant recession-fix - has failed miserably, as it was always going to. That got Americans, the vast majority of whom are far more focused on the economy than on health care, paying all the scrutinizing attention that they couldn't be bothered with a year ago to Barry O and his sales pitch versus the actual wacko legislation his party is writing. And rather than taking the hint and pre-empting the public uprising that has his approval numbers dropping like an anvil, The Chosen One AND his party doubled down on the divisiveness and teed off against many of the very voters who foolishly put them, and him, in power not even a year ago.
And now, after trashing the entire Democrat Party's political viability for 2010 (at least), he's going for an instant replay on an issue on which the American people are even more dead set against his extremist stance than they are on health care; AND on which it will be much easier for the GOP to be in active and unified opposition given that it is no longer THEIR president who is on the side of the border erasers. And selling it will be the same man who has worn out his welcome and squandered all the mountainous credibility and goodwill he lugged into office barely an eighth of the way into his term.
Explain to me again exactly how Barack Obama is a "super-geeeeenius" in any sense other than that of Wile E. Coyote. I'm afraid it's just not registering with me.
