A Pitiful Epiphany
This is almost like when Darth Vader got his prosthetic hand chopped off by Luke Skywalker and Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious told the latter to finish him off. Feel the betrayal, Sailor:
One would have thought that losing the presidential bid his 2005 mutiny should have denied him would have gotten across like a 2x4 between the eyes the folly of his cultivated maverickiness. Evidently he really didn't see the past year coming. Which makes this piece of senatorial folly the true "cluelessness" of the day.
Queeg claimed that he was protecting minority party rights against the day when the GOP would find itself relegated there. At the time we argued that that was the surest express lane to defeat for Senate Republicans that was then conceivable, as it proved there was no point in keeping them in power if they wouldn't use that power to advance the center-right agenda as ruthlessly as the Dems would advance their own once re-empowered. Little surprise, then, that collapse of base support in 2006 made the difference in several razor-thin defeats that cost the GOP control of the Senate. A prophecy most depressingly self-fulfilling.One can give McCain points for keeping a consistent stance.
But, at the time, McCain's conservative critics noted that Democrats in the Gang of 14 would never honor a similarly consistent stance. McCain, Graham, Snowe, Specter, Voinovich and the others were all being used by the Democrats to protect their own privileges in the minority, we said, but we would never see the reciprocal protection of Republican minority rights that McCain promised.
He's finding out now that we were right.
