Iran: March 2009 Archives

Another public service announcement from the Hard Starboard Radio Network:

A sword of Damocles hangs over our heads. It is a real threat that has been all but ignored.

On February 3, Iran launched a “communications satellite” into orbit. At this very moment, North Korea is threatening to do the same. The ability to launch an alleged communications satellite belies a far more frightening truth. A rocket that can carry a satellite into orbit also can drop a nuclear warhead over any location on the planet in less than forty-five minutes.

Far too many timid or uninformed sources maintain that a single launch of a missile poses no true threat to the United States, given our retaliatory power.

A reality check is in order and must be discussed in response to such an absurd claim: In fact, one small nuclear weapon, delivered by an ICBM can destroy the United States by maximizing the effect of the resultant electromagnetic pulse upon detonation.

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a byproduct of detonating an atomic bomb above the Earth’s atmosphere. When a nuclear weapon is detonated in space, the gamma rays emitted trigger a massive electrical disturbance in the upper atmosphere. Moving at the speed of light, this overload will short out all electrical equipment, power grids and delicate electronics on the Earth’s surface. In fact, it would take only one to three weapons exploding above the continental United States to wipe out our entire grid and transportation network.....

Within weeks after such an attack, tens of millions of Americans would perish. The impact has been likened to a nationwide Hurricane Katrina. Some studies estimate that 90% of all Americans might very well die in the year after such an attack as our transportation, food distribution, communications, public safety, law enforcement, and medical infrastructures collapse.

We most likely would never recover from the blow. [emphasis added]

And to think that when I argued for an Iraq-style, regime-changing pre-emptive invasion of Iran six years ago, commenters and emailers called it "madness".  Instead, the Bushies went the weak-assed diplomacy route, and now Red Barry is not only doubling down on it, but seeks to mothball our anti-missile defenses as well.

THAT is the true madness.  And the most frightening part is, there's not a damn thing we can do about it.

Hey, nobody ever said PSAs can't be buzz-killers.

....and how it's happening:

Hezbollah is using the same southern narcotics routes that Mexican drug kingpins do to smuggle drugs and people into the United States, reaping money to finance its operations and threatening U.S. national security, current and former U.S. law enforcement, defense and counterterrorism officials say.

The Iran-backed Lebanese group has long been involved in narcotics and human trafficking in South America''s tri-border region of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. Increasingly, however, it is relying on Mexican narcotics syndicates that control access to transit routes into the U.S.

Hezbollah relies on "the same criminal weapons smugglers, document traffickers and transportation experts as the drug cartels," said Michael Braun, who just retired as assistant administrator and chief of operations at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

"They work together," said Mr. Braun. "They rely on the same shadow facilitators. One way or another, they are all connected.

"They''ll leverage those relationships to their benefit, to smuggle contraband and humans into the U.S.; in fact, they already are [smuggling]."

His comments were confirmed by six U.S. officials, including law enforcement, defense and counterterrorism specialists. They spoke on the condition that they not be named because of the sensitivity of the topic.

While Hezbollah appears to view the U.S. primarily as a source of cash - and there have been no confirmed Hezbollah attacks within the U.S. - the group''s growing ties with Mexican drug cartels are particularly worrisome at a time when a war against and among Mexican narco-traffickers has killed 7,000 people in the past year and is destabilizing Mexico along the U.S. border. [emphasis added]

Kinda puts the border control/illegal immigration "controversy" in a lot more sinus-clearing a context, huh?  As every real-life Jack Bauer knows, all the bad guys have to do is succeed once.  Look how the course of the past eight years has been impacted by the 9/11 strikes.  Now remember that Iran is amassing a nuclear weapons stockpile and Hezbollah would be one of their chief delivery vehicle options.  Indeed, if I were the mullahs, I would be sneaking nukes and/or radiological materials into the U.S. and getting them in place in major American cities right now for the showdown with us they've been building toward for thirty years.

With that, in turn, as a backdrop, try this blurb on for size:

A plan by President Barack Obama to send more federal agents to the Mexican border is inadequate to control growing drug violence in the two countries, an influential U.S. senator said on Wednesday, and he said he would seek $385 million more from Congress.

Senator Joseph Lieberman, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said he would try to quickly pass funding to hire 1,600 more Customs and Border Patrol agents and extra immigration officers, build up law enforcement centers and fight human trafficking.

On Tuesday the Obama administration outlined plans to redeploy more than five hundred federal agents to border posts and the Mexican interior and redirect $200 million to combat smuggling of illegal drugs, money and weapons.

"I don't think it's enough," Lieberman said at a hearing of his committee. "The danger here is clear and present. It threatens to get worse."

And the gist of the Obamunist retort?  Blame America first.

The hell of it is, thanks to the Little President's Ameriphobic pacifism and his predecessor's feckless failure to fight the War on Terror to a victorious finish, the ayahtollahs HAVE gotten the drop on us.  The question is not if they'll pull the trigger and bring us to our knees, but when.

And then Red Barry will have another "opportunity" to exploit.

I take it as a given that the reason why Team Messiah has launched a public relations war against Rush Limbaugh is because their ambitions to silence him via reimposition of the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" suffered a major setback of late.  Perhaps also because the last time El Rushbo was designated "the leader of the opposition" when the GOP was shut out of power, Republicans captured both houses of Congress in the very next mid-term election.  Plus there isn't any nationally prominent Republican officeholder the Obamunists consider to be in Red Barry's league (outside of Alaska, of course, but it's not yet Barracuda's time).  And then there's the evident psychological addiction libs have, a frenzied compulsion, a crazed need to have some center-right object on which to direct their bigoted, murderous hatred.

Annnnd as usual, they're making complete fools of themselves in the process:

The Democratic National Committee has joined the administration’s campaign against talk-host Rush Limbaugh, proposing to place an anti-Limbaugh billboard message “in Rush Limbaugh's hometown of West Palm Beach, Florida.”

The DNC placed a banner on its homepage inviting visitors to participate in a contest to determine what message of ten words or [fewer] will be placed on the billboard. After visitors complete a form and submit their entry, they are also invited to make a contribution to the DNC.

The Web site declares: “We'll go through all of the slogans you submit, and the winner will have his or her submission appear on a billboard in Rush Limbaugh's hometown of West Palm Beach, Florida - and receive a free T-shirt featuring the winning slogan.”

I can see it now: "I participated in the DNC's 'diss Rush' contest, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt!"

Frankly I don't see this contest working very well, because most, if not all, of the entries will be too profane and/or obscene for public consumption.  But apart from that is the sheer puerility of the stunt.  A billboard ad that says "Rush is a big FATSO!" or whatever is going to harm him....how, exactly?  Surely the Obamunists are aware that ever since they took the Great One's bait, his audience numbers took another quantum leap upward, right?  Surely they realize that he's only a talk radio show host and no direct political threat to them, right?  Indirect, sure, but the way to combat that aspect is to starve him of attention, not lavish it upon him.

Besides, look what happened the last time a hard-left Donk White House tried to take on Limbaugh.  The result for Bill Clinton was a bigger audience for Limbaugh, a GOP Congress, and nearly a wrecked presidency.  If, as libs endlessly slurred, George W. Bush took on Saddam Hussein to show how big a penis he was packing, is not the war on Rush Lucifer's equivalent?  And won't that show something B.O. presumably doesn't want the public to see?

Postscripturally, there is one other problem with the DNC's little contest:

On his Thursday program, Limbaugh pointed out that West Palm Beach is not his residence – he lives in nearby Palm Beach, Florida, where billboards violate city ordinances.

He also invited his listeners to join in the contest with positive slogans.  Which most likely will overwhelm the negative entries and lead to the contest being quietly terminated.

The DNC doesn't remember "Operation Chaos"?  Sheesh, they've forgotten the 1970s and the 1990s, but this was only a year ago....

I also assume that the above is Comrade Hussein's effective answer to Limbaugh's debate challenge.  Which I suppose you could put in the same publicity stunt category were it not that it's the Obama White House that has gone out of its way to lavish the Maha Rushie with all this free publicity.

You DO also realize that by themselves designating Limbaugh as the "leader of the opposition," they're making it that much more politically hazardous to try and FD him off the air later, right?  But in their arrogance, they probably think they're building public support for his muzzling.

What do you call that?  "Culling the herd."

And they call these idiots "foreign policy realists":

The United States should extend its nuclear umbrella to its Middle East allies and offer enriched civilian-use uranium to Iran and other countries in the region to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, two respected former presidential national-security advisors told senators Thursday.

Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Zbigniew Brzezinski, who advised President Jimmy Carter , and Brent Scowcroft, an adviser to President George H.W. Bush, offered an outline of what they thought President Barack Obama's approach to Iran should be.

Both agreed that the White House should negotiate directly with Tehran to stop Iran from producing a weapon that could threaten Israel and destabilize an already shaky Middle East.

"Respected"???  Scowcroft was the petaQ who was toasting the butchers of Beijing within a year of the 1989 Tianmen Square massacre; he had a hand in signaling to Saddam Hussein that Kuwait was his for the taking as far as we were concerned.  Brzezinkski was the architect of Jimmy Carter's disastrous foreign policy that actively handed over Iran to the mullahs, triggered the hostage crisis, all but invited the Red Army into Afghanistan, and almost lost the Cold War.  There is NOBODY who is LESS deserving of respect as a foreign policy guru than this pair of appeasenik fools.

And naturally they're urging more diplomacy and more appeasement, which will only embolden (and bankroll) the Islamic regime's nuclear ambitions and hasten the final WMD showdown with Tehran for Middle East supremacy.  Without saying so, they're recommending Bill Clinton's failed North Korea strategy that was proven a fraud in 2002 by the NoKos' chortling self-admission of cheating once they had nukes in hand, and but for their first test in 2006 being a dud, would have produced a full-blown nuclear confrontation with Pyongyang.  And the mullahs are a lot further down the nuclear road than was the Kim regime (though the latter is busily trying again).

Here's a prediction: even after Isreal is bombarded and several of our cities go up in nuclear flames, the same Beltway pacifists will call the same failed foreign policy gurus to the same type of hearing to offer the same failed advice.

If, you know, there is still a U.S. Capitol in which to meet, and any of these toDsaH'pu are still alive.

Here's the mess President George W. Bush REALLY failed to clean up.  And now the Israelis, as always, are going to have to take matters into their own hands (via Newsmax Insider):

Four recent developments have pushed Israel closer to a confrontation with Iran over its nuclear weapons program — and that could have dire consequences for an already beleaguered U.S. economy, according to best-selling author Edwin Black.

Black, an investigative journalist whose books include, The Plan: How to Save America When the Oil Stops, cited the four developments in an Op-Ed piece for the Jerusalem Post:

  • Iran successfully launched a satellite into outer space on February 2 and plans three more satellites this year, creating “an easily weaponized space net that worries American military planners.”
  • The International Atomic Energy Agency admitted in mid-February that it had underestimated Iran’s nuclear stockpile by about one-third, and now confirms that Iran has enough nuclear material to build at least one bomb.
  • Iran has stepped up its uranium enrichment program with thousands of highly advanced centrifuges, and is now near its goal of 6,000 centrifuges. “American policy-makers are now convinced that Iran, despite all protests and charades, is in a mad dash to create a deliverable nuclear weapon,” Black disclosed.
  • Benjamin Netanyahu has just become the prime minister-designate of Israel, and he is determined to take action against Iran before it can deliver a nuclear weapon to the nation that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said should be “wiped off the map.”

Also, Russia is in the process of delivering an advanced air defense system that can shoot down Israeli aircraft and drones. But the system will not be fully operational for several months, “creating a narrow window for Israel to act,” Black observes.

The author points out that Iran has repeatedly vowed that if attacked by Israel, it will close the Strait of Hormuz to shipping and attack the Saudi Arabian oil facilities at Ras Tanura and Abqaiq.

“Any one of these military options, let alone all three, would immediately shut off 40% of all seaborne oil . . . and some 20% of America’s daily consumption,” Black writes.

Such an interruption in oil supplies, he warns, would likely push gasoline prices in the U.S. to $20 per gallon.

However, let the Iranians simply get confirmed possession of nuclear weapons and they will dominate the entire Middle East and hold that 40% of all seaborne oil hostage anyway via nuclear blackmail against the Gulf states, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.  And, you know, wipe Israel off the map and bring America to its knees.

How did we get into this perilous predicament where the Jews have to attack first in order to have a prayer of pulling their, um, bacon out of the nuclear fire (not to mention our own)?  Because we squandered years upon years in which we could have been aiding the Iranian people to overthrow the mullahgarchy.  Then President Bush wasted his entire second term on worthless multilateral diplomacy with Tehran that provided the Islamic regime with all the time it needed to put all the pieces of an indigenous warhead assembly line into place instead of pushing ahead with Operation Iranian Freedom.  A sad and tragic omission given his one-time promise to not "let the world's most dangerous regimes gain possession of the world's most destructive weapons".

Now it's too late.  And by my worst-case estimate, the mullahs could already have two nuclear warheads, and be nearing completion of a third.

It's never failed to astonish me how history repeats itself.  In the 1930s there were several points at which Adolph Hitler's race towards plunging the planet into all-out war could have been thwarted for so much less cost in blood and treasure.  But the natural Western inclination towards retreat into comforting disbelief and self-delusion versus hardheadedly accepting and acting upon reality said no.  Mein Kampf was silly bombast that Hitler didn't really mean, and would never REALLY try to carry out.  He was a reasonable man with whom we could do business.  Diplomacy uber alles, diplomacy uber alles!

But he wasn't a reasonable man.  Diplomacy only weakened the Western democracies and hastened Hitler's rush towards global war.  And sixty million people, a tenth of them [*AHEM*] Jews had to pay the price for the blindness, failures, and cowardice of men like Neville Chamberlain and Eduard Daladier.

Now we behold another fascist dictatorship with dreams of global conquest and eradicating world Jewry, only this one is building an arsenal of nuclear weapons and ICBMs and already controls a world-wide terrorist network.  And whom do we have stalwartly defending us?

Barack Hussein Obama.  You know, the man who wants to appease every enemy at once.  And the man who is already wreaking havoc on our domestic economy in advance of this looming, catastrophic oil supply shock.

Remember VP Rogaine's warning about a foreign crisis in Red Barry's first six months?  You're looking at it, folks.

Pity your eyes weren't this open four months ago.
