"But you must remember, my fellow-citizens, that eternal vigilance by the people is the price of liberty, and that you must pay the price if you wish to secure the blessing. It behooves you, therefore, to be watchful in your States as well as in the Federal Government." -- Andrew Jackson, Farewell Address, March 4, 1837
The question it asks is clear: Should those we knew and loved be forgotten and never thought of? Should old times past be forgotten? No, says the song, they shouldn't be. We'll remember those times and those people, we'll toast them now and always, we'll keep them close. "We'll take a cup of kindness yet."
"The phrase old acquaintance is important," says my friend John Whitehead, fabled figure of the old Goldman Sachs, the Reagan State Department, and D-Day. "It's not only your close friends and people you love, it's people you knew even casually, and you think of them and it brings tears to my eyes." For him, acquaintance includes, "your heroes, my heroes—the Winston Churchills of life, the ones you admire. They're old acquaintances too."
Read the whole thing, it's interesting.

Christmas is a time when kids tell Santa what they want and adults pay for it. Deficits are when adults tell the government what they want and their kids pay for it.
~Richard Lamm
Ain't it the truth?? Anyway, we as Christians know that while what they do in Washington is frustrating at times and infuriating at others, ultimately at the end of the road lies heaven, and there's nothing they can do about *that*.
JASmius adds: It better be Christ-filled, because Red Barry has been, is, and will continue stealing everything else....
UPDATE: Seven young men found dead of massive heart attacks tomorrow (or "the Christmas meal my wife will NOT be fixing").
Enjoy.

WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANKSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"
NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;-- for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;-- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;-- and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;-- to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

I have a lot to be thankful for this Christmas...and the best way to enjoy it is to try not to pay attention to the crap going on in Washington. What a screwed up bunch! I mean, take a look at Michelle Malkin's blog right now...the stuff she is covering is enough to make you want to hole up in a bunker. I guess I can be especially thankful that I'm not a disingenuous, intellectually dishonest liberal Democrat. They have totally lost their souls.
I'm sitting here in my living room surrounded by beautiful Christmas lights and decorations, my family is safe and healthy, and hey, it's still America, at least for the time being.
Rush posts this every year, it's great! "The Real Story of Thanksgiving." Read it and be thankful!
JASmius adds: Or better yet, watch and listen:
It's from last year, but the content should be the same. Only thing different is how much less we have to be thankful for. But look on the bright side: we have so much more to be thankful for than we will a year from now - aside from a restored GOP Congress.
JENBER adds: I can't help but draw your attention to this. An Oprah-Obama Christmas special. Do you really think those two egos will fit into the White House?? Talk about narcissism with a capital "N!"
JASmius adds: Does this mean that Honolulu (according to the official ObamaHouse line, anyway) is going to be designated the new Bethlehem?
Check this out. It's breathtaking!
First the ups. I'm heartened by the outcry being heard from thousands of regular Americans regarding this health care debacle. Even though the Thug-in-Chief and his union minions are doing their level best to intimidate us, it's not working. Witness the Tea Party Express. The more they push, the more we'll push back. I plan to attend the rally in Bloomington on September 6. I'm sure I'll see a huge crowd of fellow Hoosiers anxious to make their voices heard. Too bad there won't be any footage shown on the evening news. Let four people show up at an abortion rally, though, and they're all over it. But I digress.
Now for the downer. It's so sad that we have people such as this in the halls of Congress.
I'm sorry, but this woman is just stupid, along the lines of Patty Murray and Sheila Jackson Lee. How on Earth do people like this get elected?
My husband was cleaning a large Methodist church here in town (he owns a carpet cleaning business). He was telling me about a girl who came through the side door, on her way to get free food vouchers. She had on an Obama Hope & Change T-shirt, was carrying a latte, and had a cell phone dangling from her hip. Is it just me, or is there something wrong with that picture? This woman is mooching free food while paying a monthly cell phone bill, drinking $4.00 coffee, and wearing a $15.00 T-shirt. The entitlement mentality in this nation is just nuts, but of course it's exactly what the Democrats want.
I've started a new blog so I can ramble about this and that...you know, things that don't really belong here. It's at http://www.jensgyrations.blogspot.com.
I see the little tinpot dictator in Iran has pulled off a landslide. Why isn't Jimmy Carter monitoring those results, huh? Why, you just KNOW it was a fair election, right? Wonder if Mahmoud had ACORN working for him?
Ahmadinejad, in a televised address to the nation, said the election had been "free and healthy."
Oh. Well then. I feel MUCH better now.
